School finance work is quiet work. But it is the sort of behind-the-scenes effort is vital to the operations of school district like the Union Elementary School District (UESD).

Since moving here just over six months ago from Indiana, new UESD Executive Director of Business Services Tonia Immel has been getting to know the Arizona school finance system, managing the District’s budget and working with architects and others to use voter approved bond dollars effectively.

A mother of two, Mrs. Immel and her husband moved to Arizona because, “You don’t have to shovel sunshine.” Already here in the Grand Canyon State was her son who is a student at Arizona State University. She also has a daughter who is an assistant golf professional at TPC Sugarloaf in Georgia, and who previously worked at TPC Scottsdale.

Working behind the scenes suits Mrs. Immel well and is as dedicated to the UESD taxpayers as she is the District.

“I need to do everything I can to funnel money into our classrooms, be it money for teacher salaries, of things schools need that help students learn,” Mrs. Immel said. “These dollars are given to the District for the purpose of providing quality education. My job is to help our district use taxpayer dollars in the most effective way that helps our students build their hopes and dreams.”
