Union Elementary School Principal Michael Welsh is the recipient of the prestigious Exemplary Principal Award.

Maricopa County School Superintendent Steve Watson annually recognizes leaders in Maricopa County who create school cultures where students and teachers thrive. Welsh was selected because he is a positive force who has built an environment of trust, guidance, feedback, high expectations, support, and caring relationships at his school.

“It is an honor to recognize Michael Welsh as an Exemplary Principal,” Maricopa County School Superintendent Steve Watson said. “He is a positive force who has built an environment of trust, guidance, feedback, high expectations, support, and caring relationships at Union Elementary. He is a strengths-based and data-driven instructional leader who builds capacity in everyone around him.”

To qualify for the award researchers review the last three years of achievement data to identify schools with a history of high student achievement, student growth and teacher retention. Superintendents are then invited to nominate principals who meet the established criterion. In addition, a selection committee conducts site visits which include interviews with selected staff members, classroom walkthroughs, and an observation of a leadership team meeting. Finalists are selected based on evidence of highly effective leadership practices and a nomination from their Superintendent.

“Mr. Welsh is a caring adult who holds high expectations for our students, staff and himself,” said Union ESD Superintendent Kristiine Morris.”He has a clear vision for student success and is purposeful in bringing that vision to life through collaboration and teamwork. Mr. Welsh is one of the best and we are proud he is a member of Union ESD!”
