Volunteer Program

Volunteers make a difference in children's lives

The Union Elementary School District is passionate about building relationships through volunteer opportunities. We encourage parents and members of the UESD community who want to make a difference in the lives of children and offer valuable support to educators to apply to become a volunteer with UESD. Volunteers are appreciated and welcome in all of our schools.

Volunteers are an invaluable resource to our teachers and students. Those who volunteer at school will sharpen their teaching skills, become better leaders, and develop a sense of pride in contributing to students’ success. When you dedicate time in a school, you help children learn important soft skills like leadership, teamwork, problem-solving and creativity along with their skills in academic subjects.

Who can volunteer?

Any person who is more than 18 years of age — and who cares about children and their education — is welcome to volunteer at any of the three UESD schools. Volunteers show a sincere concern for students, strive to give students a positive educational experience, expand a child’s ability to express ideas, and are appreciative of the school’s efforts to educate all children to provide maximum opportunities for each individual.

What do volunteers do?

UESD offers a variety of volunteer opportunities. Classroom, library and recess/lunch volunteers work directly with students under the direction of teachers and other school staff. Office clerical volunteers, and some library volunteers, work under the direction of school secretaries and librarians.

UESD understands that parents are busy and have little to no spare time. Though we appreciate all the help we can get, no school is expecting a full-time volunteer commitment.

Volunteering doesn’t always have to be in the classroom or during school hours. There are a variety of things you can do, such as:

  • Helping set up for school events
  • Assisting teachers in building classroom kits at home
  • Reading with children after hours
  • Offering to tutor students
