Dear UESD Families,

We hope you have had a wonderful summer spending time with family and friends. We hope that the time off has given you time to rest and relax. We are excited to welcome your children back for a new school year.

We also hope that you took the time to make sure to take care of your family’s have taken advantage of free vaccination opportunities. We have come a long way in just one year, but we also need to recognize that the COVID-19 pandemic is not over. Because of that, we are once again asking for your help. To ensure every UESD child is afforded a high-quality education provided by a caring adult, we need our students and staff healthy and attending regularly. This requires us to work together to stop COVID.

The UESD Governing Board approved that we start the 2021-22 year with our fully in-person model only, using CDC recommended mitigation strategies. We learned a great deal last year and were able to safely offer in-person learning to over half of our students for three-quarters of the year. We did so safely, and without any outbreaks in our schools.

As we begin the school year we will again follow CDC/Public Health recommendations. Our plan is informed and guided by these recommendations and our prior success in implementing these guidelines. Although they will most likely be revised over the course of the year, and as the pandemic changes, to start our year the CDC is recommending three essential mitigations, coupled with our other layered prevention strategies:

  1. Masking when indoors for the unvaccinated and when around large groups of potentially unvaccinated individuals.
  2. Practicing social distancing.
  3. Vaccinations for those who are eligible.

Recent changes to Arizona Law prohibit our Governing Board from mandating masking in schools. However, because most of our students are under 12 and not eligible for vaccinations, to start the year we highly recommend and encourage students and staff to wear a mask while indoors. In addition, federal law mandates that masks be worn while on all forms of public transportation. Therefore, until further direction is provided, we will require masking on all District transportation. If you or your child does not have a mask, your school will provide one on request.

This year we have most of our amazing staff returning and we invested in additional teachers to keep our classroom sizes smaller. These smaller classes will allow us to serve all our students in-person using CDC and Public Health recommendations for practicing social distancing and cohorting.

Vaccinations worked in helping us stop the spread of COVID amongst our adult population last year. From February through the end of the year, after the vaccinations started, we had zero (0) staff cases of COVID. While most of our students are not eligible yet, the best way to protect them is for all eligible individuals to become vaccinated. We will be hosting vaccination events throughout the year and can help you locate a place to receive a free COVID vaccine. Our next event is at Hurley Ranch on 7/30/2021. Contact your school for more information on how to sign up.

This year we will also be offering opt-in, weekly pooled COVID testing for students and staff. We will also continue rapid testing to help identify any positive cases.

Union Elementary School District #62 is here to inspire hope and empower all children to courageously pursue their goals and dreams. School starts August 2, 2021. Thank you for choosing Union Elementary School District as your educational partner. If you have any questions, or need additional support, please do not hesitate to contact your school or the district office.

Sincerely,

Atentamente,

Kristine Morris
Superintendente

Dear Union Elementary School District Families & Community,

Welcome to the 2022 School Year. We have missed you all and hope that you and your family remain safe and healthy. We are excited to welcome you and your child(ren) Back to School on August 2, 2021.

We are happy to share that our Governing Board approved last evening that we start our year with our fully in-person model only. We learned a great deal last year and safely offered in-person learning to over half of our students for three-quarters of the year.  We did so safely, and without any outbreaks in our schools, when students returned to school in October 2020. We will use what we learned and continue using the strong mitigation strategies recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and in accordance with State law.

Although necessary, last year’s hybrid model did not serve our students or families as well as we had hoped. Our student academic progress and overall well-being did not meet expectations for our community’s children.  Therefore, this year most of our amazing staff have returned and we invested in additional teachers to keep our classroom sizes smaller. These smaller classes will allow us to serve all our students in-person using CDC and Public Health recommendations.

During 2021, we improved our communications and we worked to strengthen relationships with each family.  We want that to continue and are starting the year with individual Meet your Teacher Conferences. On July 29, and 30, each student will attend a conference with their parents/guardian and teacher to get to know one another, review essential information, and learn more about the programs and offerings at each campus.

We will have our health office staff, transportation, food service, after school programming information, and other helpful resources available for you during your visit.  Of course, there will be forms to sign. To ensure you feel ready to sign the forms, your school will be sending you the information to review in advance.  Don’t worry, you don’t have to print, just read ahead of time and be prepared to ask any questions you might have and then sign your forms when you meet your teacher.

What happens next?

You will be contacted by email or text, by your school to set up a parent-teacher conference on July 29th or 30th.  Please take some time to schedule your appointment right away. First come first served.

We are asking all visitors, while in buildings, to wear a face covering and always practice social distancing.

The day of the conference, you will meet your child’s teacher and tour around the campus receiving important information from transportation, food service, student IDs, and uniform information.  Plan about 45 min-1 hour to complete the entire process, including meeting your teacher. Please only bring the child attending the conference.

When does school start?  School Starts August 2, 2021.

Thank you for choosing Union Elementary School District as your educational partner. The safety and well-being of your children remains our top priority. If you have any questions, or need additional support, please do not hesitate to contact your school or the District office.

With warmest regards,

Ms. Kristine Morris, Superintendent

Ms. Kristine Morris, Superintendente
