McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act

The Stewart B. McKinney-Vento Homeless Student Assistance Act protects the rights of students without permanent housing or those that are experiencing transitional housing situations. These include students who:

  • Living in a motel or hotel
  • Living in shelters (i.e. domestic shelters, violence shelters, homeless shelters, in CPS custody in a group home)
  • Temporarily staying with friends or relatives because they lost their home (Note: families who choose to live together and share housing do not qualify)
  • Living in a place not ordinarily used for sleeping (i.e. cars, parks, public places, abandoned building)
  • Live with a guardian due to the death or incarceration of a parent

You have the right to:

Children who qualify for McKinney-Vento services have certain rights, including:

  • The right to stay enrolled in their school, if possible, even if they move to a different area when feasible
  • Transportation to and from school at no cost
  • Immediate enrollment in school
  • Automatic enrollment in free lunch and breakfast programs
  • Access to resources and services

 

The law applies to all public and charter schools, but not to private schools.

Educational Assistance under McKinney-Vento

If your family lives in any of the above conditions, you may be eligible for some assistance under the McKinney-Vento Act. Our district Homeless Liaison can assist in determining your eligibility for our programs.
